Addo Elephant National Park

Eastern Cape
  • Big Seven
  • Malaria-free

Best time to visit

Year-round; the dry winter (May–Sep) is best for game viewing

Addo began in 1931 to protect a handful of surviving elephants; today it is one of South Africa's great conservation successes, home to hundreds of them. It is malaria-free a big draw for families and reachable in under an hour from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).

Uniquely, its boundaries stretch to the coast and Algoa Bay's marine reserve, giving Addo the "Big Seven": the Big Five plus the southern right whale and great white shark.
